Tip of the Week

Fight Kitchen Fires

  1. To put out a small kitchen fire, throw baking soda at the base of the flames. Do not throw baking soda at a deep pan of grease (splashing may cause severe burns).

  2. If the pan lid is easily accessible, cover flames to suffocate the fire. Once extinguished, don't move the pan until it has had a chance to cool. (Moving may cause it to reignite).

  3. Keep a fire extinguisher handy -- under the sink or in the pantry -- and make sure that everyone in your house knows how to use it.

  4. If you cannot control the flames, call the fire department immediately.
